The Data Is In: Noah Is Driving People To The Bible

The YouVersion Bible App team tracked the opening of the movie “Noah,” and during the 3 day opening weekend the app reported a 300% increase in people reading or listening to the Noah story from the book of Genesis.  In actual numbers, YouVersion reports during the opening weekend, the Noah story was read or listened to on the app 389,794 times – or about 129,931 times per day.  It’s the highest number of Read the full article »

Should Christians Watch A Bible Movie Directed by An Atheist?

While there are many issues (both good and bad) about the recent Noah movie, one of the biggest criticisms that Christians have leveled at the film is that it’s director is an avowed atheist. The understandable implication is that Christians shouldn’t trust a film about a Bible story directed by a non-believer. But looking back on the history of treasured Bible films the Church has enjoyed and valued for a lifetime, it’s difficult to find much evidence that Read the full article »

First Look: Christian Leaders Speak Out About The Noah Movie

After my original blog post recommending Christians see Paramount Pictures upcoming movie Noah, and subsequent interviews in the national media, the studio called and asked our production company, Cooke Pictures to create a short video feature with Christian leaders talking about the movie.  All of these leaders have seen the film, and after the short video, keep watching for a series of quotes about the film from additional respected pastors and ministry leaders:

Why I’m Recommending Christians See the Movie “Noah”

You’ve probably heard the controversy about the upcoming Paramount Pictures movie “Noah.” In the last few weeks, I’ve seen numerous blogs, social media posts, and commentaries on the movie – usually criticizing it and detailing how far it strays from an accurate Biblical portrayal.  But as of this writing I’m one of only a handful of people who’ve actually seen the movie. Which is probably why I’m a bit bothered at the condemnations and protests from Christians who have never actually watched it. That’s why I felt compelled to Read the full article »

When The King James Bible Mattered

Writer and critic Christopher Hitchens was an outspoken critic of religion, but when it came to the King James Bible, he was a huge fan.  In the May 2011 edition of Vanity Fair magazine, he wrote a powerful article about the King James Bible, and it’s impact on Western civilization.  The title of the article was:  When the King Saved God:  An unbeliever argues that our language and culture are incomplete without a 400-year-old book—the King James translation of the Bible. Spurned by the Establishment, it really represents a triumph for rebellion and dissent. Accept no substitutes!    Here’s a powerful excerpt I thought you’d enjoy.  Get out the tissues:

My Interview on Inside Edition

Here’s a few unedited quotes that were featured today on the “Inside Edition” story on Biblical epics in Hollywood for 2014:

What? Sam Adams Beer Doesn’t Like God?

Chances are, something slipped past you last week.  Yep – it was the Sam Adams God and beer controversy.   I first noticed it when CBS Boston posted the story, and then a TV news network wanted my opinion about it.  It appears that the beer maker produced a TV commercial quoting the Declaration of Independence.  But for whatever reason, they left out the word “God:” Read the full article »

What’s the Next "Gideon Bible" Idea?

I think it’s time to revisit this post I did a couple of years ago when I was interviewed on Crosswalk.com about the presence of Bibles in hotel rooms. Since the Gideons started the idea in 1899, they have become a global organization impacting millions of people. As I say in the article, it was a brilliant back idea then to place copies of the Bible in millions of hotel rooms, but in today’s pluralistic society, everyone else is going to want equal time. I travel about 150,000 miles a year, and in most hotels I already find a Book of Mormon next to the Bible. Before long, I predict we’ll find a Koran, Tao, Torah, I Ching, Writings of Confucius, and more. Pretty soon, there won’t be room for a bed.  So the big question becomes -

The J Word: The Lost Art and Spiritual Calling of Sound Judgment

A shorter version of this post appears in this month’s “Charisma” Magazine:

Last year, on this online blog, I posed the question: “What’s Wrong with Christian Television?”  It started a firestorm of interest, and began an fascinating discussion of how Christians should be using the media to share the gospel in the 21st Century. But I also received a significant number of responses from people upset that I would even bring up the subject.
