Wow Mr. Cooke. Another piece to my puzzle. I am currently trying to set up a media department in a chuch that I have been going to for about 6 months. I was asked to come in through my non-profit to help establish an identity, graphically. From there I have been granted unbelievable favor to speak into the direction of this church.

With that said, there is already a broken down version of a media department which I have to essentially start form scratch. There are people that are graciously giving their time to help and they have an ownership over their "job". Unfortunately they are not functioning in a spirit of excellence. It is a delicate process and one that is slow. I am trying to build relationships and slowly analyze the dynamic of this part of the church. I am not a paid staff member either, but I feel a calling on my life to utilize my gifting and leadership qualities to get what IS working out there. Well to get it out there in a form of excellence and way that speaks through the walls of stereotypes.

I consider myself to be a "predator", like what you describe in your book. Until that place in there, I was wondering if I was "qualified" to even be in the position. But, i feel I have the ability and knowledge in MANY areas to, with God's direction, make this media ministry work. Still learning more about producing and directing. Your video/commercial for the Reach Conference is what has excited me and has given me confirmation that this is what I need to be doing.

Thank you for that book suggestion.

Greg Schremp

Any comments would be helpful...not sure why I wrote this here.....ahha.

Great stuff Phil!

Its important that we all think of media not just as an outlet of the church, but an actual ministry itself. Ive learned that most Pastors are begging for people to pick up the ball and run with it instead of them dribbling down court waiting for someone to pass to. Like you said be an idea source. Another thing I have heard in talking to other media directors is, "I dont have enough help!" I look at them and respond, " Is there a youth group?" Teenagers these days are running cirlces around some of the major production compaines out there! Take a look at what these kids are doing!! Anything from their myspace pages, grage band projects, and homeade videos with windows movie maker. These kids are making some really good stuff, and they all are looking for responsability. Give it to them. More so than ever befoe we have the tools to create great stuff, yet we just get lazy. Its like complaining about not being able to build a house when you have a tool box in the garage.

It's time that christian media steps up to the plate, but that is only going to happen if we make it happen. I heard someone say once, "What you hate the most maybe is what you were called to correct."
