What’s On Your Computer?

One little sidelight to note about the Oral Roberts University lawsuit, is that – according to the written document – the majority of the allegations were apparently taken from a university owned computer. It seems Stephanie Cantese (Lindsay Roberts’ sister) allegedly was keeping a list of “areas of exposure” on her computer as a warning to Richard and Lindsay about things that might be out of bounds or inappropriate – financially or otherwise. Good idea. As Richard and Lindsay explained on Larry King the other night,
Stephanie was having her computer worked on by a student, who copied the hard drive and found the document.

The point is – how many business and non-profit leaders have been brought down by IT guys? From financial misdeeds, sexual misconduct, child porn, and more, over and over, we’ve seen stories of people who’s careers were trashed by what others found on their computer. And it’s not just bad stuff either – I’ve written before to never criticize someone in an e-mail, because you never know where it might end up. Likewise, confidential company information, personal data, passwords – a whole host of things could potentially be exposed if the wrong hands got on your computer.

If you’re looking at child porn on your computer, then I hope you get caught. But there are plenty of confidential things from a personal and family perspective where you should be very careful.

Of course, I’m not saying that anything wrong was done in the ORU case, but it really is a wake up call to live a transparent life, and keep your hard drive transparent as well. The Geek Squad is always watching… :-)

Hey Phil. I just thought I'd take this space on your blog to tell you I miss you and I thank God regularly for the way you and your family have blessed me and have encouraged me in the work of the kingdom of God.

I think it was written a long time before the advancement of technology and the information age about how wise God is – Nothing in all creation can hide from Him. Everything is naked and exposed before His eyes. This is the God to whom we must explain all that we have done. Everything that is now hidden or secret will eventually be brought to light. This is a doubleedged sword for everyone and it will cut both ways. That is why the focus has to be less on the messengers (probably none at all) and more on the Person of the Message. I must decrease so that He may increase.
